Overall, I’m so pleased I have finished this module and achieved what I have!
I have been a bit behind and only got really into the project in the last 2 months, I have found it very hard to motivate and have inspiration but it kicked in eventually!

Creating the houses probably took the longest, as I was going to add elements and create imaginary houses .... However I visited a few local towns and was inspired by the beauty that already existed. I worked from photographs and sketches I had collected and worked on the composition of the houses in means of where windows were and roof slopes and window displays.

After I was able to do this, things started flowing . I used pencil as I have used it in a past project and when scanned and edited, it adds a texture from all the smudging your hand makes when wiping across it. It does make it difficult if you want to rub out a part, traditionally or digitally, as it effects the tone of the page.

With the pencil edited, I then created a separate layer to add the colour behind. I wanted bright, limited colours. At first I though this would mean perhaps three colours across the whole mat, but as I was creating the buildings, I just wanted to have fun and enjoy all the colours on offer. I still maintained my limited colour palette by reducing each house to 3 colours, plus the pencil overlay colour. I really enjoyed spending time with the ink dropper tool trying to find just the right shade, and it felt good looking at a finished building and it looking smart.

This ended up with me having an array of sorbet, zingy buildings.

The road layout was the next battle, and it took me a good week or two just woking on jigging the buildings around and getting the colour of the road right so the whole design came together. I didn’t want to spend all this time on the buildings to ruin it at the last moment! At first I though straight roads worked, and the houses in line with them.... but it was a bit boring and straightforward. I tried curves and corners in the road. It was surprisingly hard to come up with a layout that you could imagine driving around and was interesting to look at. This is where I thought I could take a part of an existing road layout- I went onto trusty Google Maps and searched around Cheltenham for a good square to take. The one I took was very similar to the final layout - I removed some roads and traced around it, making it my own and all wiggly.

I played with textures and the large calendar covered in roller ink worked well as it had straight lines within it to keep a grid effect and construction within the image.

Buildings - check. Road - check.  But there was space for more. What else does a town or village have? Shrubs, trees, plants, litter! Except the lat, I drew out some trees and grass looking things in pencil, scanned them in and used colour overlay to blend them in greens and yellows into the scene.

Where could I sell it?

Typical toy stores include Smyths, Toys R us, and of course sections within departments stores like IKEA, Argos.

Posh Totty do lots of other things other than children’s toys, which may explain their slightly limited produce. I haven’t found car mats per se, but the bright colours and bold designs could mean something for my house designs themselves.

They sell toys for babies, toddlers and kids. On their website I have also found some house basket cases - baskets and containers in the shape of houses, with embroidered detail and handles.

I have found, under ‘wooden toys’, some train track and garage construction models.
it comes with a play mat and wooden pieces, but the wooden cars would have to be bought separately.

My Pinterest board I have pinned inspirational images and designs up on. A bit of a mood board.

Bags

I have ordered a 14Lt bag and a 1lt bag - the large one for the mat and the small one for toy cars to go into.
I could make a stencil as I have black and red fabric paint - i could have my name in black and a house shape in red.....

or I could buy photo transfer print paper - I am a bit wary though as the finish on these sometimes leave a slight shine to the fabric where the paper is.

I did get a quote off of Cleverbagger.com, however I think I would have had to bulk buy. I looked into how much it would be for them to print my design onto the bag, and postage, it would have come to £10 approx. Hmmmm, time to be thrifty.

Some more of the mat....

The detail came out very well in the newsagents, the red and yellow work well!

without trimming -

size comparison, each house is around A5  in size

I think i will hem it by folding it over a 1cm and using a sewing machine to stitch it, and iron.

Its arrived!

hurrah it’s here!

I need to trim the edges, and iron it flat.
I am so pleased with the quality of it - it is so strange seeing something completely digital come to life in the real world! I couldn’t quite imagine the scale, the houses and images are a lot bigger than what I thought they would be, due to working on the constrained computer screen.

I could have added a lot more detail in, for example I have grass and shrubs dotted around. I am glad
I did the houses so detailed and wasn’t scared to par them down a lot.
The darker colours work well- although a few of the paler colours don’t work so well, so if I were to make it again, I would use dark colours for the outline of the houses, more detail. Other than that I am jumping for joy!

I am planning to have it on a table, I will buy some toy cars from Poundland or similar, so that guests can have a drive around the town!

I’m so excited! I never thought it would be so nice to look at!

Road in, buildings to fit around.
I went onto google maps to find a road pattern that already existed - the one is from around cheltenham.
added road from texture and cut out with the lasso tool. altered road design so building are bigger.

added background in soft green. added trees and plants. added overlay on road to soften.

some extra added, tweaked.....
ready to send to the print?????
only a bottle of cola, 2 large pizzas, 5 cups of tea and 6 hours later.........

playing with pavements

looks busier ..... I think the attention is scattered and that the textures are too much on this design - pavements are a good idea however this is a car mat and unlikely tiny people will walk on them. It would be ideal if the children playing on it had barbie dolls or lego men that they want to include in their imaginary world. .... However it doesn’t look right, far too crowded.
That means more playing!

more road thoughts and experiments....

I started off with the road, cut from a map texture, then placed the houses around it.
I have fitted them all on which I'm quite glad they do, although i am going to keep tweaking them until i am happy with it, then send to print. I want it to look amazing!

pencil sketches.... very grubby hands

I have collected buildings from my trips around the south west - most notably was a trip to Winccombe in the Cotswolds. Each house had beautiful bricks and wonderful untypical shop front layout.
I have also been to Bideford near my hometown, where again, the modernity hasn't quite caught up with it yet. I find interest in the independent stores- after all why bother to travel if all high streets look the same with the chain shops? No, i want to see a different street in each town.
Cheltenham, where I am studying, has also given me buildings. Originally i was planning to just use Cheltenham buildings but i have found inspiration from many places.
